Cthulhu Saves the World review

From the developer of Breath of Death VII: The Beginning, Cthulhu Saves the World is exactly like Breath of Death VII: The Beginning. It has the same brain-dead late-’80s combat system, the same kind of loud, repetitive music, and, most importantly the same joke. I say ‘joke’ in the singular because this, like Breath of Death only has one joke, which is that the writer thinks fantasy RPGs are dumb. I might be inclined to agree, or even be amused by this joke from an external perspective if the game wasn’t exactly the kind of fantasy RPG that it’s mocking.

Exactly like its predecessor, Cthulhu Saves the World is a turn-based RPG where each member of your party has a unique set of spells they can use against the swarms of identical enemies. Also exactly like its predecessor, it shares the central plot point of ‘traditionally villainous character is thrust into a heroic role to comedic effect’. Somehow this beat is less funny this time around, not only because it’s the second attempt at the same unfunny gimmick but also because every bit of humour that could be derived from the concept is present in the title. In fact, most of the game’s substance is also in the title. The phrase ‘Cthulhu saves the world’ contains the entire story arc of the game and all of the humour while simultaneously wasting far less of your precious time on derivative shit that nobody was impressed by twenty years ago.
